Warming up to ‘Rock Star’ architecutre

Filed under: architecture, design, seattle — Brett @ 3:38 pm

Seattle is fortunate to have our new public library. The building designed by the Rem Koolhas team struck the city as a controversial landmark. The conventional library that existed before this has been completely rethought, and reorganized. While I have enjoyed the public space and the experience moving throughout the new library, I found it difficult to understand the functionality of the space.

After seeing the design process for the library explained on the TED site, I warmed up to appreciating the building in a whole new way. Any frustration I had with the inefficiencies of finding books and changed to admiration in the buildings scalability for accepting new stacks and technology as they evolve and grown into the space.

Here is a video of the design process explained by Joshua Prince-Ramus at a TED conference.

Create for a Cause

Filed under: art, coworking, design, fashion, philanthropy — Brett @ 4:37 pm

Create for a Cause has a project underway in Rwanda led by philanthropist Chrissie Lam. She has facilitated a collaborative effort between artists, designers, and activists to create positive change and is working with the Gisimba Orphanage as her first partnered organization.

The past stories told here of the orphans who suffered from the genocide are mournful, while their future is inspiring, and beyond deserving of this effort.

The Create for a Cause vision is an impressive blend of international philanthropy, visual design, and entrepreneurial marketing and is one that I hope continues to grow and reach out to other causes around the world.

Biking and driving better

Filed under: Uncategorized, coworking, design, humor, northwest, portland, seattle, sports — Brett @ 11:29 pm

Just before a flood of clashes between bikers emerged from across the country this summer, I wrote this post on the observed tension. After reading numerous news stories and widely-discussed blog entries I’ve found that an interesting and heated debate has formed. While the press would like to cover this tension as a ‘war’ between two and four wheelers, I feel this is a gross oversimplification.
