Create for a Cause

Filed under: art, coworking, design, fashion, philanthropy — Brett @ 4:37 pm

Create for a Cause has a project underway in Rwanda led by philanthropist Chrissie Lam. She has facilitated a collaborative effort between artists, designers, and activists to create positive change and is working with the Gisimba Orphanage as her first partnered organization.

The past stories told here of the orphans who suffered from the genocide are mournful, while their future is inspiring, and beyond deserving of this effort.

The Create for a Cause vision is an impressive blend of international philanthropy, visual design, and entrepreneurial marketing and is one that I hope continues to grow and reach out to other causes around the world.

Biking and driving better

Filed under: Uncategorized, coworking, design, humor, northwest, portland, seattle, sports — Brett @ 11:29 pm

Just before a flood of clashes between bikers emerged from across the country this summer, I wrote this post on the observed tension. After reading numerous news stories and widely-discussed blog entries I’ve found that an interesting and heated debate has formed. While the press would like to cover this tension as a ‘war’ between two and four wheelers, I feel this is a gross oversimplification.

Coworking Story on NPR

Filed under: The GC, business, coworking, seattle — Brett @ 4:04 pm

Today’s morning alarm radio show was this Marketplace story on the growing trend of coworking. When I followed up to hear more about the show and saw this video I couldn’t help but think, “Dang. We are lucky with our space!” I’m all for the social interaction and networking part to what we have going on at The Greenwood Collective, but I am a huge proponent of having desks where we can all get a ton of work done in combination with the freedom to roam around are large studio. We plan on seeing a growth in people and activity in our space, but as we grow our plan is to make sure we retain the most ideal working environment for the businesses operating here.

The Coworking Concept

Filed under: The GC, business, collectives, coworking, seattle — Brett @ 10:40 pm

I’m finding the idea of sharing a workspace with individual business owners or freelancers is nothing new. In the past few months I’ve been seeking out ideas regarding the feasibility making The Greenwood Collective work. While I had an idea it was a creative environment worth striving for, I had no idea how popular it has become with today’s mobile workforce. Aside from being an attractive way to work, the concept of sharing workspace has caught on with the likes of many successful business owners. The examples I’ve been pointed to are geared more towards giving people a temporary space than what can be expected of TGC, but they are worth researching to gain ideas on how to structure tenant agreements or memberships.

Here’s a Businees Week article that showcases many groups that have accomplished a similar concept. Link courtesty of Lee Lefever.

Do you know of any other successful collectives / workspaces?
