Ewok Style

Filed under: architecture, design, humor, northwest, sustainability, technology — Brett @ 10:22 pm

As a kid I always envisioned living among the Ewoks high above the trees in a land with suspended bridges, campfires, and the occasional speeder bike ride. The thought of living in the woods was something that could be done without building a concrete foundation and cutting down trees in the process.

Dam Sail

While researching sail designs for an identity project today, I stumbled upon a new design for capturing wind power. I’ve seen the wind turbines, tidal buoys, pv cells, geothermal piping, and many other ways to harness natural energy, but this concept looks as though it was devised in Middle Earth.

BMW Visualizations

Filed under: art, design, exhibition, interactive, technology — Brett @ 11:26 pm

I came across this captivating installation posted on Core77 today that blends hidden technology with simple tangible forms- 714 metal balls to be exact.

This piece completed by ART+COM for BMW showcases a new way to blend aspects of space, motion, and time. The morphing display accommodates the company’s ninety year history of design examples in a fixed location.

I’d be curious to see if the automotive industry begins using this approach to display design concepts to the public before they go into model production. I think some type of variation on this type of display could be extremely effective for visualizing space and forms. Granted, metal balls could be substituted for something else less distracting, but seeing forms at scale is an excellent way to grasp a design concept.

Stuck Without A Charger

Filed under: Uncategorized, humor, technology — Brett @ 11:31 pm

I love mobile devices. My favorite is the permanent yet portable creative laptop workstation. We all enjoy the freedom mobile devices provide us with, but now that they are an integral part of our lives all hell breaks loose when their batteries run out of juice and there is no way to recharge.

I just found out the hard way that it is wise to have an analog plan B when you’re chargerless. When all of one’s design tools, to do lists, contact info, calendar appointments, and writing tools live on a dead machine, they find themself in an extremely powerless S.O.L. predicament.

I think it’s time for a universal hand crank invention to come on the market that can charge just about anything. That way any frustrating negative energy can be transformed into a positive charge.
